No injuries were reported after an extra-alarm fire ripped through a wholsesale food warehouse on Chicago's South Side tonight.
The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. in the 1-1/2-story warehouse building in the 800 block of West 36th Street, in the city's Bridgeport neighborhood, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Kevin MacGregor said.

Teamsters reject 10-yr. city pact

BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter/fspielman@suntimes.com There's a fly in the ointment that threatens to disturb Mayor Daley's carefully crafted plan to guarantee labor peace through the 2016 Summer Olympics.
By a vote of 279-172, Teamsters Local 726 voted Wednesday night to reject the unprecedented, 10-year deal that would lock in the prevailing wage for 8,000 members of the building trades.
The contract apparently fell victim to a power struggle within Local 726. The union represents 2,000 city employees, including truck drivers, equipment dispatchers, foremen, booters, garage attendants and cashiers.
Employees fighting to unseat the union's existing leadership team lobbied against the deal, arguing that it undermines seniority and opens the door for massive layoffs at a time when Daley's new 21st Century Commission is exploring the idea of privatizing garbage collection and the city's water filtration plants.
"We're all truck drivers. We always had citywide seniority. Now, they want to make it departmental seniority. If a guy has 30 years on with Streets and San and they decide to privatize sanitation, all those guys with all those years are gone," said truck driver Vincent Tenuto Jr., who lobbied against the contract and is among those hoping to unseat the union's executive board.
"There's a clause in there that says the mayor could subcontract our jobs out. We want that removed. We have 2,100 jobs in 2007. We expect to have 2,100 jobs in 2017. They're also taking away our seniority so they can put anybody they want wherever they want. It feels like legalized clout."
Jim Franczek, the city's chief negotiator, could not be reached for comment, nor could Chicago Federation of Labor President Dennis Gannon.
The Teamsters' thumbs-down vote was disclosed hours after Daley bragged to reporters about his ability to guarantee labor peace.
"Many of your articles said, 'This is going to be a very, very difficult year. Oh my God. We've got the CTA unions. We've got the city unions. We have unions from the Board of Education. Oh, there's going to be chaos. There's going to be a crisis. They're not going to work together. There's a difference between the mayor and all these unions,' " Daley said sarcastically.
"What happened? . . . . It all worked out because we sat down with the belief that we can work with our unions -- a 10-year agreement. It's amazing. They want stability. We want stability," he said.

2 more Cook County hospitals will charge co-pays
Pharmacies at Cook County-owned Provident and Oak Forest Hospitals on Sept. 4 will begin charging $3 co-pays for each prescription filled, up to a maximum of $10 per visit, the county's Bureau of Health Services announced Thursday.
The move will come three weeks after an identical program was implemented at Stroger Hospital and its adjacent Fantus Clinic. The co-pays will not be charged to patients who can't afford to pay them, county officials say.
The co-pays are another step being taken by the county to get its struggling health system's finances balanced. Officials expect the system will end the year with a $60 million deficit, despite massive cost-cutting earlier this year.

ISRA suggestions for Tuesday, August 28:Ways to show your support for the Second Amendment.
As you know by now, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, with assistance from some anti-gun organizations, continues his misguided attack on your right to keep and bear arms on Tuesday, August 28, with some protests in selected cities in the United States. Jackson has called for events in 25 cities, it looks like there might be about 15, including two in Illinois.
In Springfield, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence is going to stage a protest about the Virginia Tech massacre by lying on the ground. This in spite of the fact that in the months since the event, Federal and State legislation has been passed that would prevent a mentally unbalanced person, like the shooter in the VT incident, from buying a gun.
In the Chicago region, Rev. Jackson and Fr. Michael Pfleger are going to protest in front of DS Arms in the Barrington area. There is no connection from top shelf rifles made for the law enforcement and civilian markets to criminal activity in Chicago.
In past activity this summer, ISRA has called for counter-protesters. In hindsight, ISRA has seen that liberal media air time of Jackson's protests is greater when there is a perceived conflict. This could work in favor of Jackson and his agenda to take away your right to own firearms. Realizing this, ISRA has not called for counter-protesters since then. When no one shows up to oppose Jackson and Pfleger, the story does not play for long in the press, if at all. For Tuesday, August 28, ISRA is asking you to show your support for the right to keep and bear arms in one or more of the following ways:
1. Be the Voice of the People: Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in support of the right to keep and bear arms.
2. Support your local gun shop: Visit your favorite store on your lunch break or after work and make a purchase.
3. Exercise your rights: Visit your local range after work, sharpen your skills and your resolve.

Controversy Brews As City Cleans Up After Storms
With a tornado warning for western Cook County, and storms headed toward Chicago, NBC5's Charlie Wojciechowski reported that some questioned why the emergency sirens weren't sounded.
"As the storms approached the city, the storms were diminishing," said Office of Emergency Management and Communications Director Tony Ruiz. "Then and there, we decided not to activate the system, based on the National Weather Service. Now, as the storm approached the city, it did burst, (but) it was too late to activate the system."
Ruiz said he watched from a room on the third floor of the city's emergency center, with the computer screen to activate the sirens only steps away. Ruiz said, however, that he decided against making the call.
"At no time was the city of Chicago in any imminent danger," Ruiz said.
Throughout the city, crews worked to clear the damage left behind by the storms, Wojciechowski reported. On the North Side, Keith Dykstra was working to take apart a tree limb that fell in his building's side yard.
"(I'm) relieved that no one has been hurt, at least not badly, that I've heard," Dykstra said. "And, I just hope that it gets cleaned up and people get their power back."
According to the city, almost 4,000 tree emergencies were reported, as well as 224 reports of traffic signals out and 243 electric lines reported down.
"The Department of Streets and Sanitation worked throughout the night to clear tree debris," said Mike Picardi of the Streets and Sanitation Department. "To restore traffic signals, to restore streetlights that are out, alley lights that are out."
